Applying For a Job

Once a student has identified what type of job they would like, the complicated process of finding available positions and applying for them can begin. Some jobs may be advertised on websites or in newspapers, others by word-of-mouth, and others may require a door-to-door search. Applications may include an online or paper form, or a cover letter and resume, and some jobs may require pre-employment screening tests. Applications must be completed accurately and completely. After the application is submitted, students may wonder when and how to follow up with the employer. Finding and applying to open positions therefore requires significant organizational, technical, and social skills.

This unit will help students develop these skills by introducing them to the types of applications they are likely to encounter, and encouraging them to practice the social interactions they can expect as part of the application process. They can then be sure that their application will help them get a foot in the door in their job search.
