Self Assessments

Before beginning a job search, it is very important for students to have a sense of their own interests, strengths, and weaknesses. Knowing what works for them and where they struggle will help them narrow their job search to appropriate jobs. It will also help them recognize areas where they need to work to build their skills for finding and keeping a job. Instructors can present relevant self assessments at the beginning of each stage of a student’s job search, or any time an issue arises that suggests that a student could use further guidance or skill development. Instructors should help students understand the framework for each assessment, and help them work through the questions if necessary. Encouraging students to think about and articulate their needs is an important life skill, and these self assessments can help students learn to be their own best advocate.
