Basic Skills

The workday is filled with social encounters, and it is easy to take for granted the basic interpersonal skills needed to successfully navigate these events. To have a positive experience in the workplace, students must know how to have conversations, how to ask for and accept help, and how to handle questions and interruptions.

Some students may experience significant anxiety about these social exchanges, or inadvertently frustrate their co-workers by missing some of the subtle “clues” that direct a conversation.

It is helpful to break these skills down into smaller stages, such as greetings, entering a conversation, or saying goodbye, and then practice them through role-playing. This section will help the student build a firm foundation of social skills that will serve them not just in the workplace but in their social lives as well.
