Keeping a Job

Keeping a job requires being a responsible and dependable employee, showing up on time and ready to work, and behaving appropriately throughout the workday. This unit covers all of the organizational, social, and emotional skills that are necessary to succeed on the job. These skills are needed to sustain a positive working environment, to adapt to the norms of workplace behavior, and to self-regulate anxiety and frustration. This unit treats many of the issues that may cause a job placement to fail, including how to act towards supervisors and co-workers, what kinds of behavior are appropriate at work, how to manage time and organize the workspace, and how to adapt to change. By breaking these complex skills down into incremental and achievable topics, and by using the many visual supports, self-assessments, and role-playing scenarios provided, instructors can help students to gradually increase the social skills they will need on the job.
